LAMOTTE TWP. — A 22-year-old Cass City man was killed and a 21-year-old Bad Axe man injured in what authorities are calling a “fatal pedestrian accident.”

The accident occurred around 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 on the north side of West Sanilac Road (M-46) near Germania Road.

According to Sergeant Shelly Park of the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, a preliminary investigation indicated a 2005 Ford Explorer driven by a 33-year-old Sandusky man was travelling west on M-46 when it struck the two men, Tristan Kuntz of Cass City and Devan Kluger of Bad Axe, as they were “in the roadway” changing a driver’s side rear tire on a vehicle on the shoulder of the westbound lane.

A third subject, Logan Schank, 19, of Cass City was standing behind the 2010 Ford Fusion with the flat tire and was not injured.

The initial investigation also determined the Fusion had a defective tail light and did not have its four-way blinkers on at the time of the accident. Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.

Authorities said a third vehicle proceeding east on M-46 was seen passing by at the time of the accident and its occupant or occupants may have observed something.

According to Park, deputies on the scene immediately began CPR on the 22-year-old Kuntz until medical personnel arrived. Kuntz was later pronounced deceased.

Kluger was transported by Marlette EMS to Marlette Regional Hospital and later transferred to Lapeer McClaren Hospital where he was still listed as a patient on Monday.

The name of the Sandusky man was not released.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Shelly Park at 810-648-2000 extension 2.

Assisting the deputies on the scene were Marlette EMS, the Michigan State Police Accident Investigation Team out of Caro, Sandusky police and the Lamotte Township Fire Department.
