Devils fall to relentless Pirates

HARBOR BEACH – An upset of a top tier team in the GTC East could have been one, big bright spot for the Brown City football season.

The Harbor Beach Pirates, though, were not about to allow it.

The Pirates, headed for a GTC East title clash with Ubly this week, scored in every quarter Friday night on the way to a, 39-22, victory over the Green Devils.

“We had a rough night in Harbor Beach,” admitted BC coach Aren Cooper. “We knew we needed to stick to our game plan in order to have a chance to beat a good team. Unfortunately, due to penalties and some mistakes, we could not keep the ball out of Harbor Beach’s hands enough.”

After Harbor Beach scored first in the opening quarter, Brown City came right back to take an 8-7 lead on a Ricky Lindsay nine yard TD run. Lindsay also ran in the two-point conversion.

But, the Pirates dominated from there, scoring the next three touchdowns to build a, 27-8, lead by early in the third quarter. They added two more scores after that.

The Devils did notch two more touchdowns of their own on Lindsay’s runs of five and three yards.

Cooper praised the play of Pirates’ QB James Schelke, who rushed for 225 yards and a TD and passed for another 58 yards and a score.

“Defensively, we were unable to stop Schelke, who is a tremendous athlete. He played a great game and will give Harbor Beach a chance in any playoff matchup they may get.”

Lindsay led BC with 97 yards on the ground on 17 carries. Overall, the Devils had 208 yards rushing and 46 passing.

Sebastian Blevins and Gavin Woods paced the defense, each getting in on nine tackles.

While Harbor Beach (4-0, 6-1) plays for the East championship with the Bearcats (4-0, 6-1) this Friday night, the Devils (2-2, 2-5) close out division play at home, in front of a homecoming crowd, against Sandusky (2-2, 3-4).
