Eagles club Mayville; stay unbeaten

MAYVILLE – The Deckerville Eagles scored 34 unanswered points in the second and third quarter Friday night and remained undefeated on the 2017 8-man football season.

The Eagles handled the Mayville Wildcats, 42-8, thumping to move to 2-0 in the NCTL Stars Division and 3-0 on the 2017 campaign.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the opening quarter, Deckerville getting on the board first on a 75 yard interception return by Kenton Bowerman and a two-point conversion run by Cruz Ibarra.

After Mayville (0-2, 1-2) tied the game, the Eagles took over from there. Cole Romzek scored on an eight yard run and Ibarra tallied twice on scampers of two and five yards to put the Eagles up by 20, 28-8, at halftime.

Two long runs – a 60-yarder from Brenden Handley and a 69-yarder from Isaac Keinath – put the game well out of reach in the third quarter.

Deckerville, for the night, rolled up 365 yards rushing on 44 carries. The Eagles also had 32 yards through the air. Mayville netted 244 yards of total offense.

Handley, who has been a standout on defense for Deckerville, made the most of his time as a running back this week with 140 yards on 12 carries. Ibarra added 62 on 14 totes.

The Eagles will be on the road, again, this Friday night, visiting the Kingston Cardinals in Stars Division action. The Cardinals are 1-1 and 2-1, suffering their first loss last week, 46-26, to International Academy of Flint.

Schedule change for Eagles

The NCTL 8-man football game between Dryden and Deckerville will be played on Thursday., September 21, 2017, at Deckerville High School at 7 p.m. The game had been scheduled on the 22nd but had to be moved because of a no available officials.
