Photo by Sharon Rich DECKERVILLE – The Deckerville varsity volleyball team opened its season on Thursday and came away with an NCTL crossover win. The Lady Eagles swept Akron-Fairgrove in three games, 25-19, 25-21, 25-15.

Coach Jessie Kubacki’s 2016 team tied for first in their division a year ago with a very young squad. The Lady Eagles are looking for more in the newly aligned NCTL where they play in the Stars Division.

“It was a great first game,” remarked Kubacki. “There are positions we still need to work on, but the girls are working well together.”

Senior libero Madisyn Guza turned in her usual strong performance, finishing with 41 digs. She also added eight service points. Senior setter Liz Binder had 29 assists and added 13 points, including six aces while Olivia Espinoza turned in 12 kills.

“Madisyn did a great in her libero position. Olivia had a great night hitting. And, Liz is doing a great job of mixing the sets up, giving spikers a lot of opportunities.”

Deckerville will begin Stars play this Thursday at Mayville and follow that with a tough road game at Kingston on Tuesday, September 19.
